Do Nofollow Links Help SEO in 2026?

By Waqar Bukhari October 21, 2026
Do Nofollow Links Help SEO in 2026?

Ask ten SEOs whether nofollow links help rankings and you will get ten confident answers. Most of them mix facts from Google with personal experience, and the two are not the same thing.

This guide separates them. You will see what Google has confirmed, what is only reported by practitioners, and how to build a link profile that makes sense either way.

The short answer

Nofollow links give little or no direct ranking boost. That is the official position. But they can still support your SEO indirectly through traffic, brand visibility and a natural-looking link profile. Whether they carry hidden ranking weight is debated, and nobody outside Google can prove it.

What nofollow actually does

Google introduced the attribute on January 18, 2005, to fight user-generated spam. The idea was simple: if a spammer drops a link in a comment, the site owner can mark it so it earns no credit.

Today Google treats links with the nofollow, sponsored and ugc values as hints. Google says it generally does not follow such links, but the linked page can still be found through sitemaps or other sites.

Not every nofollow behaves the same way, so keep these apart:

•        rel="nofollow" on a link: applies to that one link only.

•        Robots meta nofollow: covers every link on the page.

•        robots.txt disallow: stops crawling of a URL.

•        noindex: keeps a page out of search results. It needs the page to be crawlable so Google can see the tag.

People often use nofollow when they actually want one of the last two. It is the wrong tool for that job.

The three link attributes

In September 2019 Google added two more values. sponsored is for ads and paid placements, ugc is for comments and forum posts, and nofollow is for any other link where you do not want to pass credit.

Rules of thumb:

•        Paid or affiliate links: use sponsored. Google has said it prefers sponsored for paid links.

•        Comments, forums, user profiles: use ugc.

•        Anything else you do not want to vouch for: use nofollow.

•        Mixed cases: values can be combined, for example rel="ugc nofollow".

If you are unsure, any of the three is safer than leaving a paid link unmarked.

Do nofollow links pass ranking value?

What is confirmed. Nofollow is a hint, and Google generally does not follow these links for ranking credit. Google's own people still say spam links do not work. In January 2026, John Mueller again told a worried site owner that spammers' links in comments had no effect.

What is debated. Because nofollow became a hint, some SEOs argue Google can treat certain nofollow links as normal ones. Digital Oft, for example, reports that nofollow links from authoritative sources can move the needle. Google has not published a rule for when this happens, so treat it as an observation, not a promise. Do not build a strategy around it.

Where nofollow links still help

Referral traffic. A nofollow link does not pass SEO value, but it still sends clicks. A link from a busy site is worth having even if it is tagged.

Discovery that leads to real links. Many of the places where people discover content tag outbound links as nofollow. Someone who finds your article on a large platform may later link to it from their own site, and that link may be followed.

A natural profile. Some SEOs argue that a mix of follow and nofollow links makes a profile look natural and avoids red flags. Note there is no official "ideal ratio". Anyone quoting an exact percentage is guessing. A profile with only perfectly followed, keyword-rich links looks odd anyway.

Brand mentions. Being talked about on relevant, trusted sites builds recognition whatever the attribute says.

Nofollow links and AI search

This is the part most older guides skip, and the evidence is mixed.

On one side, a Semrush study found that nofollow links have nearly the same impact on AI visibility as follow links, with ChatGPT and Gemini leaning slightly toward nofollow and Google AI Overviews and Perplexity leaning slightly toward follow. That fits the fact that heavily cited platforms like Reddit and Wikipedia tag their outbound links.

On the other side, correlation is not cause. Ahrefs found that 76% of URLs cited in AI Overviews come from pages in Google's top 10, which suggests classic rankings still feed AI answers, at least for Google's own product. Some analysts describe backlinks as an upstream input to AI visibility rather than the final signal.

A sensible reading: do not chase nofollow links as an "AI trick", but do not discount them either. A useful mention on a respected site can help you in both classic and AI search. Clear, well-structured content matters just as much, which is why writing about the whole topic instead of one keyword is worth your time.

How to audit your nofollow links

1.      Export your backlinks from your preferred tool. Each one has blind spots, so see our comparison of Long Tail Pro and Ahrefs before you pick. Remember also that some sites block tools like Ahrefs, Moz and Majestic, so no report shows everything.

2.      Sort by link attribute and look at where each type comes from. Comments, forums and social sites should mostly be nofollow or ugc. Editorial links from relevant sites should mostly be followed.

3.      Check the quality of the linking sites. A quick way is to run a list through the Bulk DR Checker, then manually review anything odd.

4.      Look at your own outbound links. Paid, affiliate and sponsored links should carry sponsored. User-submitted links should carry ugc.

5.      Check your internal links. If you find nofollow on your own navigation or articles, remove it. Never add rel="nofollow" to your own internal links. To keep Google away from certain internal URLs, use robots.txt or noindex instead.

6.      Run a wider technical check. A free site audit can catch attribute and crawl problems you might miss manually.

What to look for when you build or buy links

If you work with a provider, a "follow only" demand is the wrong test. Better questions:

•        Is the site real, with genuine readers and topical relevance?

•        Is the content useful on its own, even without the link?

•        Is the anchor text natural, not stuffed with a commercial keyword?

•        Does the placement involve payment? If so, Google's preferred label is sponsored, and you should discuss that openly before placing it.

•        Is the process manual and transparent?

Quality outreach-based approaches such as guest posting, blogger outreach and wider link building work best when relevance and editorial value come first and attribute is a secondary detail. Google's spam policies have expanded to cover AI features too, so shortcuts carry more risk, not less.

Common mistakes

•        Nofollowing every outbound link to "protect" rankings. This was PageRank sculpting, and it does not work the way people hoped.

•        Using nofollow to hide pages from search. Use noindex or robots.txt.

•        Leaving paid links unmarked.

•        Rejecting a link because it is nofollow. A relevant link from a trusted site is useful whatever its tag.

•        Obsessing over ratios. There is no official target.

The bottom line

Nofollow links will not usually lift your rankings the way a followed editorial link might, and that is the confirmed part. They still bring visitors, mentions and opportunities for followed links later. Build a profile based on relevance and trust, label your own paid and user-generated links correctly, and measure results by traffic, citations and rankings together.

FAQ

Do nofollow links help SEO?

Not directly for rankings, according to Google. They can help indirectly through traffic, awareness and a natural profile.

Is there a "dofollow" attribute?

No. There is no "dofollow" value. A link without a qualifier is simply an ordinary link.

Should I nofollow affiliate links?

Yes. Use sponsored, or nofollow as the fallback.

Can Google ignore my nofollow tag?

It is a hint, so Google may treat some links differently. Do not rely on it for blocking pages.

Do AI tools care about nofollow?

Studies disagree on the details. The safest approach is to earn mentions on trusted, relevant sites and keep your content clear and useful.
